| I rode an '06 1200GS for the trip, outfitted with TKC80 'twinduro' tires. Soft luggage (Ortlieb drybag panniers and Packsafe tailbag) were used to keep weight down. Heavy items (fuel, stove, canned food, water) were kept low and forward in front panniers. Clothes, mess kit and water purifier in the rear. The large tail bag held light, bulky items (riding pants, rain gear, fleece). Fly rod and gear bag were strapped to the tail bag with sleeping bag and tent. |

| Left Portland around 10am, traveling up the Clackamas River on Hwy 242, then down the Breitenbush River to Detroit. Quick stop for gas, then over Santiam pass to Sisters. Left Sisters on Old Santiam Pass to join up with the Discovery trail. Earlier this spring I had completed Route 4, 'Seneca to Sisters' through the Ochoco Mountains, so I skipped the upper part of the trail that starts at Big Lake. The trail down to Three Creeks Lake had some beautiful views. Nobody on the trail. |
